24 mm and major light loss 2008/06/04 11:27 Karma: 0
Hello everyone!

I`m here to ask a question about the nikon 24mm f2.8 AIS on a letus adaptor. I own both the lens and the adaptor but, unlike my 50mm f1.8 and 135mm f2.8, I can`t get decent focus or enough light out of this lens. I know the lens is working having put it on a nikon slr. Given that I can successfully focus and expose with the other two lenses on the adaptor can anyone take a guess at what I`m missing or what might be wrong?

regards from one very puzzled englishman.

I have the 24 f2.8 as well and don't quite like the image it produces. Quick tests show quite heavy vignetting and the lens does not appear as sharp as the other nikkors i have.

Yes, I feel the same way about it. I think it`s not so much the lens ( on a nikon slr body my mint AIS is predictably and reassuringly perfect ) as the letus adaptor`s shortcomings: obviously it eats light. Also it seems to me that a wide shot, all the way back, just before you see the inner mirrors (where I want to work ) is asking for trouble so to speak (I often have a problem where I can see a dirty wash over the picture from the ground glass.) Those in the know say a 24 mm is really only good in very tight rooms, or right in front of buildings. A specialist lens. I`ve taken to zooming in a bit past the nonsense and into a better area where the problems are minimized. OK, but....in that case...which lens do I need for a razor sharp wiiiide shot....( and don`t say a Cook anyone......smiles)

I've got a 28mm f2.8 and I get vignetting as well. My Nikkor 35mm f2 does very well though.

I have a Nikon 24mm f2.8 i got from lenses35.com and it is fantastic for confined spaces. No vignetting for me.

Check your set up and remeber with all these adapters that even when you are after the widest shot you need zoom in a little with the camera to clean the edges too.

Regarding my original post I have since realised the problem was not a lens but the position of the ground glass inside the letus adaptor. It`s possible, if you have the right inch size allen key to undo the front and get inside where you can adjust the position of the ground glass on little rubber feet until it will let you get sharp focus out of your 24mm. I also eliminated my other problem ( a nasty dirty looking wash across the whole image) this way. For details go to the letus site or better still try the indie film maker forums....plenty of people have been experiencing this same problem. Now my images are perfect.
