Can I use a Nikon 18-200 DX lenes? Dark image 2008/08/09 21:46 Karma: 0
Hi, I'm setting up my Letus Extreme for the first time today with a Sony EX1. I followed all the install instructions and then I put on a Nikon lens from my D80 SLR. It's the only lens I have currently. It's an 18-200 DX AF-S 3.5-5.6. When I look at the LCD screen on the EX1 the image is very dark, even when pointed at a well light area.

Is there something I need to adjust on the camera or is there something I'm not doing? Or is it the lens, 3.5 just not wide enough?

Thanks for any input.

f3.5 is not a fast lens and if you are shooting indoors with available light, you will find it to be very dark. Be sure the lens is open to f3.5 also. Not sure if you can manually do that with your particular lens. I would look at using lenses that start at f2.8 and find a few that are either f1.4 or f1.8, like a 50mm.
The impossible just takes longer

Thanks for replying. I'll check to see if it's at 3.5. I'll get a smaller fixed lens eventually, just between the EX1, the Letus, and new MBP, I'm hurting for cash flow.

The problem with the 18-200 is: It has NO manual aperture ring so it will be in its smallest opening F22. You need a special electronic mount to control the aperture. So this will not work on a Letus adapter. And its a DX lens, meaning it is made for DX (actually academy 35mm size) sensors. Giving you a round edge if try to use the full 35mm frame of the Letus.

Beside the fact the quality is not that great. You are much better of with a 40 year old 50mm F1.4

You can use a matchstick or something else to keep the aperture full open and control the lighting with your camera though.

(Actually just sold mine so not sure if there is still the manual latch to control aperture)

Check the lens mount and see if there is a mechanical latch to open the aperture to max.
