zoom lenses unusable on LEX 2008/10/03 08:42 Karma: 0
Hi,
I read on this site, in one of the video's, that zoom lensens are not recommended. What would be the reason for this? Is it only the speed of the lenses? I'd like to use fast 24-70 and 70-210 lenses. There is also the issue of weight of course, but that's something that can be solved
Who does have any experience with zoom lenses om the LEX
jaap

any zoom lenses will work fine with the Letus Extreme, just make sure the maximum lens aperture does not go over the f5.6 limit.

Closing the aperture beyond f5.6 will start to lower the quality of your footage..

If the zoom lens doesnt not go over that, than you will experience no problems.

Though, there is one setback of using any zoom lenses. When using zoom lenses, while you zoom in or zoom out, your focal length changes, which alters your focus point point. In simple words, besides zooming-in/out you have to pull the focus at the same time...

to migueltb: if I focus at 4.5 meters, the lense will stay focussed ast 4.5 mtr even if I zoom in or out. So why should one need to re-focuss?

Maybe there are some zoom lenses that have a mechanism that may adjust focus points to a distance, but I am not aware of that technology or havent had anything of that kind.

But I am sure, that in all, or most of SLR zoom lenses, their focus point changes as you zoom-in/out, unless you are focusing on infinity.

Take a close look on the next lens picture:

Image:

As you can see, you have the scrolling numbers with the focus distance, an there are several red line markers, each one with a different amount of zoom or focal length.. So if you zoom, you have to focus relativetely to the marker which it belongs to.

Maybe there are some lenses which are more advanced...If you know some that automatically change their focal point while zooming, please tell me which lens, Id buy em instantly.
