TOPIC: Ultimate build. Not.

Ultimate build. Not. 3 Years, 7 Months ago Karma: 0
Getting some really nice images with the Ultimate DOF I got (serial number 19). But only if I have the adapter mounted on legs and the shot is still. As soon as I pan, I get a whipping motion at the end of the shot and the cause is obvious.

No matter how I have tried to secure and fit the Nikon mount and the backfocus ring, everything wobbles. I was expecting a near 'interference fit' but my sample doesn't offer anything like a secure mount. The back focus ring crashes forward, and none of my F mounts will fit without wobbling down or from side to side by as much as 1.5mm.

Anyone else having this issue?

Justin.

I have Ultimate #15 and it came out of the box with every screw
loose. I tightened everything and still had too much play, especially with my FF torqueing the Nikon primes.

I know another owner had similar issues. I went and retorqued
everything again, making everything tighter. I am now okay with
the current condition, front end play is much less, but I expect
to have to retorque often.

The problem is, mine won't get stable at all to start off with. I cannot get a shot with any kind of movement, not even a simple pan, let alone any handheld or jib work.

None of my 5, brand new Zeiss ZF lenses will sit properly on the end like they do on my Nikon D3, no matter how I 'finesse' the fit. On the Nikon, you'd be hard pressed to tell if the lens was even separate from the body when the lenses are mounted.

It nearly cost me my shoot today (for the main local Newspaper). It certainly cost me embarrassment that a US$5,000 adapter appeared to be so sloppily constructed.

I now have 2 weeks in which to be able to supply the 'film look' for my next job with them or I'm in danger of losing the work - and I could buy 6 Ultimates for the money I may lose.

Not. Funny. At. All.

I have shared my personal experience with the issue, I wanted to share some info told to me by another owner, which is hearsay.

I will only post about direct, personal experience with equipment I own or have rented numerous times.

I have also recommended next steps, it is up to the OP to post his progress on the issue at this point.

Just a thought, but the whipping motion you are referring to sounds almost as if image stabilization is turned on. Image stabilization can add a jello like effect to pan shots with or without an adapter on.

Yes - Phil Bloom pointed this out and I had mine switched on. However, even with it off now, there is an unpredictable flick at the end of some pans on account of the wobbly front assembly.

Really not happy with the backfocus collars and Nikon mount pairing. Just not as stiff and well fitting as I expected. I really hope that mine is abnormal and that I can sort this out with Letus Direct but this remains to be resolved.
